2023 NWSL Draft Tracker: Full list of picks as phenom Alyssa Thompson is #1 for Angel City FC

featured image

The 2023 NWSL Draft saw California high school forward Alyssa Thompson go first overall to Angel City FC thanks to a series of wild trades made in the days leading up to the draft. At just 18 years old, the Los Angeles native should immediately contribute and has unlimited potential if Angel City is able to develop Thompson well. In a normal draft, a high school student going first overall would have been the craziest thing that could happen, but in this 2023 NWSL draft, it was anything but normal.

Duke star Michelle Cooper was second, while the first defender off the board was Florida State’s Emily Madril, who fell with the Orlando Pride in third overall.

With a record 12 trades during the draft, the Washington Spirit was able to take control of the draft in the third round after the North Carolina Courage used its draft capital to amass four first-round players. There are many ways to build a roster in the NWSL, but the draft, especially this one, has talent ups and downs. With COVID allowing players to have a fifth year of eligibility and in some cases transfer to other schools such as Penelope Hocking at Penn State, this is a polished class and teams wanted to add depth, and many have done just that.

They’ll need that depth when the key players head into the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer, which is why not only have many goalkeepers been selected, but some teams like the Kansas City Current have essentially selected lines from All-new defense. Hocking also saw his twin sister Iliana move to NJ/NY Gotham FC, creating a new sibling rivalry in the league. It was an exciting, record-setting draft that saw the U.S. women’s team advance Lynn Williams traded.
